EF #20: The Marriage Effect

Ehm, relationship. This word is really meaningful for me as a girl and a woman. Being single for most of my teen life made me think that I wasn’t lucky, haha.. When finally I got a boyfriend, it wasn’t as simple as I thought. Did it affect my study life? I don’t think so. Up to that point, I concluded that having no boyfriend was more fun since friendship lasts forever. Hung out with my close friends and met new people were things I really liked to do.

Then, the situation changed when I started to work. In this age, people started to ask “when will you get married?”. I think it’s really common in Indonesia but I’m not sure that question is polite enough to ask in other parts o the world. I had no boyfriend and I didn’t want to be in a relationship unless it’s for a marriage. In this phase, I worked in two institutions and had less sleep. I kept myself busy because I liked it and I had plenty of time.

I might be too busy thus I got sick often. Few times I was hospitalized, while having flu was almost once a month. My roommate said, “I had a friend who got sick often like you. When she got married, she became healthier!” I laughed at that time. How come a marriage makes someone healthier? I thought if I kept working like that and became a wife at the same time, I would be even sicker for having not enough time to sleep.

Thank God, finally I found Mr.Right a.k.a my husband. This is the relationship that I’ve waited for. The question is,  what is this marriage effect for my life? Well, I can say that I am healthier, haha... My roommate’s theory was right then, although I guess the cause wasn’t only the marriage but also the reduced activity. I quit my job and moved to the city where my husband worked. When I got a job again, I didn’t get sick that much (because it was only one job).

I also think that this relationship has a lot to do with my mental health. Having someone to talk to and to share your happy and sad, and it is not forbidden by our belief, makes me feel safe, calm, and blessed. If our mind is healthy, our body will, too. Thank God, I haven’t got any problem with my husband that affects other aspects of my life (and I hope it will never come).

I think, any kind of relationship will make us more mature and wise because that’s our decision. If it goes wrong then we can learn something from it. If we find the relationship we want, then it’s our job to  make the best of it. If you are not in a relationship yet? Enjoy your life. It’s a matter of time until you find it J
