If I can mention all good habits I’ve got from my parents, I
will say reading is my favorite one. Is it a hobby or a habit? For me, it’s
both. I like reading, I do it often, then it becomes a habit.
Everything that becomes a habit starts early. First time I
realized that book is something that I like was when I was a first grader. Once
a week, my father took me and my sister to bookstores and let us buy a book.
The rest of the week, I rent comics from a comic rental. As I grew older, I
also read my parents’ magazines like Femina and Gatra, also newspaper that we
subscribed to.
That’s why I feel something’s missing if in a week I read
nothing. Accessing news through gadget can’t replace the enjoyment of reading
newspaper and reading e-book hasn’ t been as enjoyable as reading real books.
Both are still informative, though. If I’m too busy, checking twitter can be
quite relieving. At least, I can keep up with news updates.
So, what’s the benefit of reading? I think everyone has
their own opinion. When I was a kid, reading books built my imagination and it
also told me things I didn’t get from parents and teachers. There was no
internet and educational videos weren’t as many as now. When I was a teenager,
it made me feel smart and confident, haha..
What about now? I still read as a part of entertainment and
me time from my daily routine. Sometimes, I read when I was breastfeeding my
son. That happened if I was really tired and needed some break but I couldn’t
fine leisure time. At school where I work, I don’t have time to read. Instead,
I brings book home especially about parenting since my students are toddlers
and I have unsolved problems in teaching them.
Does it change my life? I can’t see that because I read
since I was little, but I’m sure the positive effect of this habit in my life. Because
reading makes me know more things, I can answer questions through logical
thinking if I face problems or in emergency situation. If I don’t know, then I’ll
ask the expert or...read more LOL. Moreover, as I turned to a mom, I really
feel that reading is a MUST. Parents, you HAVE TO read! The world has changed,
raising kids needs knowledge.
All in all, I really love reading. I also want my son to
love reading, too. My husband likes reading, too. (He had just finished reading
Max Havelaar and it made me jealous because I couldn’t even move to the next
page of my book, haha). What about you? I hope you do, too.
P.S: I’m really glad English Friday Challenge from BEC is
back! If you want to share about your habit, please join this week’s challenge J
I'm glad too that EF challenge is back! :D And I can read your blog again after a while :D
ReplyDeleteBtw, your post got me thinking also about reading: is it my hobby or habit? :D I think both. And my husband also likes reading. My son does too. He's now 4 years old and started to spend some time "reading" a book, as if he could read the words :D
That's great Mbak Vita..! Your son "read" books with his own way, i think. He enjoys reading the picture :)
DeleteHallo Mba Menur.. yay, look who's back in town! the BEC Challenge :) it's been a while, right! anyway.. i guess reading is still one of my hobby and haven't gone to the next level to habit (yet). and it's true that reading gives positive effect for our mind and soul! btw, the first word of the Quran was Iqra, right? Read!
ReplyDeleteAh ya, Iqra..so I guess this hobby/habit is on the right track, haha..
DeleteOne good habit for sure. It might not seems to be helpful right now, but one day, all those things you had read, will come in handy.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree :)
DeleteReading is soo much fun. Relaxing and cheap and we can do it at our own pace and place. Not to mention our journey to the world written in the book. :D
ReplyDeleteThis habit is definitely the one I will instill to my son. :D
You're right..the journey we have when we read (esp) fiction books is such an experience. That's why sometimes when I watch movies which based on books, I become disappointed :p
